Let's find out, grade 2 Tops
[00:07 - 00:22]
Oh.
[00:22 - 00:27]
Now when my two boys and girls to listen I love your son's wedding brings you another
[00:27 - 00:37]
spying program.
[00:37 - 00:42]
And oh wise and girls. Today we're
[00:42 - 00:48]
going to talk about tops that spin. Are you ready.
[00:48 - 00:54]
Mr. Spinner and Mr. Turner you have some hard work to do.
[00:54 - 00:59]
Are you ready to do hard work. Good.
[00:59 - 01:04]
Have you ever watched a top spin round and round
[01:04 - 01:09]
until it fell over. Have you ever
[01:09 - 01:13]
wondered just what made it fall.
[01:13 - 01:18]
I've kept well not been for a long long time will it.
[01:18 - 01:24]
The top will fall over when it begins to run down.
[01:24 - 01:26]
Go slower.
[01:26 - 01:32]
Let's see if we can find out why it falls over.
[01:32 - 01:36]
Mr. Spinner. Find a cardboard disk. The big flat
[01:36 - 01:43]
circle of cardboard. Is it cracked.
[01:43 - 01:48]
Be sure it's not bent. Are folded. Lay it down flat on the
[01:48 - 01:53]
table and see if it is as flat as a table top.
[01:53 - 01:58]
Is it good.
[01:58 - 02:03]
Now listen carefully. Pick up the cardboard bins and
[02:03 - 02:08]
stand it on its edge hold it still if
[02:08 - 02:13]
you got it standing up on the end. All right now take your fingers away.
[02:13 - 02:18]
Repeat all over it. Goals it won't stand on its then
[02:18 - 02:20]
and you will it.
[02:20 - 02:25]
How can we make it stand up. Do you suppose.
[02:25 - 02:31]
Do you think that if we spin it it might stand up.
[02:31 - 02:35]
Well let's try. Mr. Spinner pick up the disc again and hold it on its
[02:35 - 02:40]
edge. Put your hand on the top. Now the part that's up
[02:40 - 02:44]
on top. Now twist your fingers and give it a spin.
[02:44 - 02:52]
Did it's been for a few minutes a few seconds. Well try it again. And while
[02:52 - 02:55]
it's spinning.
[02:55 - 03:00]
Watch it. Did you get it to spin.
[03:00 - 03:04]
Try again and see if you can get that cardboard to spin.
[03:04 - 03:07]
Just a few times anyway.
[03:07 - 03:13]
They did span. Now while it was spinning did it stand up
[03:13 - 03:16]
on the edge.
[03:16 - 03:21]
It should have. The cardboard stood up only while it was
[03:21 - 03:26]
spinning around didn't it. All right put the cardboard down and let's
[03:26 - 03:30]
try something else. You can play with that one. After a while.
[03:30 - 03:37]
Mr. Turner when you pick up the coin the piece of money.
[03:37 - 03:42]
It's a flat disc too isn't it. It looks a little
[03:42 - 03:46]
like the cardboard that Mr. Spinner used. Now I don't know what kind of a
[03:46 - 03:51]
coin you have and maybe a nickel are a 25 cent piece or half a dollar.
[03:51 - 03:56]
But anyway you pick it up and see if you can make it stand
[03:56 - 04:01]
on its edge. Try it see if it will stand up
[04:01 - 04:06]
on edge. Sometimes we can make a coin stand up
[04:06 - 04:11]
on its heads but that's pretty hard to do when you make it stand up
[04:11 - 04:16]
on the edge. Keep on trying little stand up.
[04:16 - 04:21]
All well never mind. Let's see if the coin will spin
[04:21 - 04:26]
and stand up on its head a little better than the cardboard disc did.
[04:26 - 04:31]
Now the coin is much smaller than the cardboard disc and you might
[04:31 - 04:36]
have some trouble making it spin but if you're careful it
[04:36 - 04:41]
will spin for a longer time. Let's try this turn or stand
[04:41 - 04:46]
the coin up again on its edge and hold. Hold it near the top with your
[04:46 - 04:51]
thumb and finger. Now twist it fast and
[04:51 - 04:53]
let go.
[04:53 - 04:58]
Then it's been well try it once more.
[04:58 - 05:00]
Spin it again.
[05:00 - 05:07]
It has been this time. Well now I wonder if you were having trouble your
[05:07 - 05:12]
teacher may be able to make the cawing spin for you maybe her fingers will work a little bit faster
[05:12 - 05:17]
than yours. But then you can practice after a while when you do that. All
[05:17 - 05:22]
right teacher if you're having trouble making that kind spin when you try it for us
[05:22 - 05:28]
please go ahead and spin the cawing.
[05:28 - 05:33]
Who did the coin spin longer than the cardboard did. Has
[05:33 - 05:37]
it fallen over yet. Well even if it hasn't
[05:37 - 05:42]
stop it please. And let's ban it again now this time.
[05:42 - 05:47]
Watch it very carefully what happens when it
[05:47 - 05:52]
begins to spin lower and lower. All right. Keep on
[05:52 - 05:53]
spin it now.
[05:53 - 06:02]
Is it spinning or I watch it now. What
[06:02 - 06:07]
keeps that kind being as it spins lower
[06:07 - 06:12]
and lower. Something happened to it. It gets
[06:12 - 06:17]
flatter and flatter doesn't it and then finally it's down flat on the table and it's not
[06:17 - 06:22]
spinning any more. All right let's stop spinning that kind a
[06:22 - 06:27]
minute and think what made the kind spin in the
[06:27 - 06:31]
first place. What did you do it
[06:31 - 06:36]
do to it just started spinning.
[06:36 - 06:41]
You pushed it didn't you. You really did with your fingers. It turned around when
[06:41 - 06:46]
you gave it a push. All right. Now are you ready to try something
[06:46 - 06:51]
else. Put the going down on the table. Remember how the
[06:51 - 06:55]
cardboard and the coin spun around and finally stopped.
[06:55 - 07:03]
Mr. TURNER. Are you the boy who can spin a real tap.
[07:03 - 07:08]
Well good for you I hope Still if you're not. I wish the boy who can spin
[07:08 - 07:13]
a real top would come up to the table now. Pick up your top
[07:13 - 07:18]
and will you wind the string up please around the top. Now watch
[07:18 - 07:23]
what Mr spinner is doing boys and girls if he got the
[07:23 - 07:29]
string all wound around there all right are you ready now.
[07:29 - 07:34]
I guess we better ask you to spin the top on the floor. Can everyone
[07:34 - 07:39]
see the floor it must've been his feet. If you can't move just a little
[07:39 - 07:44]
bit quickly now. All right now can you all see the floor at Mr. Binnie
[07:44 - 07:49]
feet. All right Mr. Spinner. Man your top.
[07:49 - 07:53]
Is it spinning. If it is watch it carefully.
[07:53 - 07:58]
If it didn't spin that time tried again. Wind it up
[07:58 - 08:03]
if you need to but watch it while it's spinning.
[08:03 - 08:08]
See how straight it stands at first while it's going fast.
[08:08 - 08:14]
Then as it slows down. See how it tips
[08:14 - 08:19]
over and sort of wobble back and forth and
[08:19 - 08:23]
finally goes slower and slower and then
[08:23 - 08:28]
bang over it goes. Now if you don't get
[08:28 - 08:34]
your top spinning try again after the broadcast would you.
[08:34 - 08:39]
And be sure to watch it as it slows down when you do that.
[08:39 - 08:44]
Maybe you saw it right now and maybe you had trouble getting it to spin but you can do it
[08:44 - 08:50]
after a while and you can watch it very carefully now.
[08:50 - 08:55]
Have you got another put the top down for now Mr spinner. Even if you didn't get
[08:55 - 09:00]
it to spin put it down and you can try this later. Now have you got another
[09:00 - 09:05]
kind of top there. Some of you may have a top that is run by a
[09:05 - 09:09]
spring the kind that you wind up by pumping up and down with a
[09:09 - 09:12]
rod through the center of the top.
[09:12 - 09:17]
If you have one of that kind will Miss Turner hold it up on the
[09:17 - 09:22]
table. Try to stand it up straight and let go of it. Missed your
[09:22 - 09:27]
inner group your own stand alone will it on that little point. All right
[09:27 - 09:32]
now Mr. Turner spin the top. Go ahead pump it up and down and
[09:32 - 09:37]
spin it. Is it spinning.
[09:37 - 09:41]
Is it standing up as it's been.
[09:41 - 09:46]
Now watch it as it slows down.
[09:46 - 09:50]
Sometimes cops that are run by spring we run a long time before
[09:50 - 09:56]
they slow down. But let's watch this one now and when it spins
[09:56 - 10:01]
slowly enough it will fall over won't it.
[10:01 - 10:06]
Well you keep on watching it and while you're watching let's think let's
[10:06 - 10:11]
think about this for just a minute. Q. What keeps the top
[10:11 - 10:16]
standing up straight. I hope you were
[10:16 - 10:22]
right. It stands up straight only when it's spinning fast doesn't it.
[10:22 - 10:27]
That cardboard disks stood up when it was spinning. The
[10:27 - 10:32]
Korean stood up when it was spinning. Mr Spin his top stood
[10:32 - 10:36]
up too. I wonder if you know who I.
[10:36 - 10:41]
Where maybe you do and maybe you don't but since you're a scientist
[10:41 - 10:46]
you want to know the very right words to call all things
[10:46 - 10:51]
won't you. More I knew you would. What do
[10:51 - 10:56]
we call the force that holds everything against the earth's surface
[10:56 - 11:00]
instead of letting things through I often does space. Do you remember.
[11:00 - 11:08]
Well do you know what it is that pulls a ball back to the earth when you throw it up in the
[11:08 - 11:09]
air.
[11:09 - 11:18]
What pull you back to the ground or the floor when you jump up.
[11:18 - 11:23]
I wonder if someone said gravity.
[11:23 - 11:28]
Well good for you if you did gravity the pull of
[11:28 - 11:34]
the earth the force of the Earth pulls things toward the earth.
[11:34 - 11:39]
If you throw a ball in the air away from the earth it will fall back again won't it.
[11:39 - 11:45]
And if you stumble. Gravity pulls you down and you fall.
[11:45 - 11:50]
Gravity is the name of the earth. Cool. What made the
[11:50 - 11:52]
cardboard disk fall over.
[11:52 - 11:58]
What made the coin fall over.
[11:58 - 12:03]
All right and the top two. But when the top is spinning it
[12:03 - 12:07]
doesn't fall over. Now the reason that
[12:07 - 12:12]
caps stand up straight when they are spinning is
[12:12 - 12:17]
that this spinning gives them a force that pulls away
[12:17 - 12:22]
from the Earth's gravity. That force of this spinning
[12:22 - 12:26]
top is called. Now listen carefully.
[12:26 - 12:31]
Stand true for gold or try to say that word Listen first
[12:31 - 12:36]
send traffic on San traffic go
[12:36 - 12:41]
for. All right. A spinning top has some trickle or
[12:41 - 12:47]
no you know why a cop stands up on a small point only when
[12:47 - 12:50]
it's spinning fast don't you.
[12:50 - 12:55]
Well now when you try to spin those props and when you think of those two words you learned today.
[12:55 - 12:56]
All right bye.
[12:56 - 13:18]
And now to Reggie Knight in the studios of St. Louis more of
[13:18 - 13:27]
Education radio.
[13:27 - 13:30]
This is the end i.e. Radio Network.
