This is the seventh in a series of nine programs demonstrating the accomplishments of the American

composer at mid-century the music you are hearing on this series is the work of
[00:50 - 00:55]
16 composers resident and six southeastern states. It is music
[00:55 - 01:00]
varied in style and content. Music expressive of American culture of the
[01:00 - 01:05]
present day. The variety of American music is one of the best proofs of its
[01:05 - 01:10]
authenticity and of the success our composers have shown in expressing the broad culture
[01:10 - 01:15]
of the United States. There is no American school of composers in the
[01:15 - 01:19]
sense that to be classified as an American composer one must conform to any set of
[01:19 - 01:24]
artistic criteria. And yet our music is unmistakably American invention.

Rhythmic excitement its directness and freedom from formula and its
[01:29 - 01:33]
exploration of many media of expression. Above all our music
[01:33 - 01:38]
strives to reach a large audience is not confined in the intention of its
[01:38 - 01:42]
composers to an appeal to a small group or click. It is
[01:42 - 01:46]
music that intends to speak directly to the greater American musical public
[01:46 - 01:51]
and that intention surely resides one of its profound districts
[01:51 - 01:57]
making up this seven programme or two widely differing works. The first of these
[01:57 - 02:01]
is the music for violin clarinet and piano by Margaret Farrelly.

A student of Edwin Grushecky and Wallingford rigger Miss Fairlie as a native of Georgia.
